    DB:5.63:4 Tuner Dvr zm

Apparently it's a big secret, or Comcast is totally happy with being the about the only service that still uses a two-tuner DVR. Every day I get bombarded with TV commercials of all the other television programming companies that offer equipment far superior to that of what Comcast has to offer.

    Apparently they just don't care...

Sounds like a cover all the bases RG. OTA, Sat, and IP all in one. The likelyhood of getting it is you get what you pay for or how much it will cut into the profit margin of the provider. Unless the FCC requires some kind of universal connection like a more advanced cable card RG set up it is not much of a chance to see one for Uverse.

I just found out the DirecTV DVR will not allow viewing live TV when recording either one or two shows. is this correct? Is there a work around for this lack of comparable functionality. I have a dimension 8400 with windows xp mce, an ATI X300 video card, 160 gb hd, 512 mb ram, and a 17in lcd.

I'm considering getting a tv tuner.  I want to hook it up to my basic cable and be able to record some shows.  I don't have a dvr and I have a free cable connection right next to my pc.

I'm thinking about either the ATI wonder 600/650 or Hauppauge wintv-hvr-1800.  I'm also open to other possibilities.

I did some research but I'm not a computer wiz.

    Here are some ?s:

    1) Do I need to remove my old video card to install the tv tuner?

    2) If yes to 1, will my computers video crunching capacity decrease with the tuner as opposed to the old video card?

    3) Do TV tuner cards actually produce good quality picures?

    4) Will I need to make additional system upgrades for the tuner to work well?  I already plan to add 2 gb of ram.

    5) Are tv tuner cards worth getting?  They don't seem to be popular anymore.

    Thanks.

I decided to get the Hauppague 1800 TV card, it's PCI X1.  I also decided to install a new video card which is PCI x16.  The video card supposedly takes up 2 PCI slots b/c it has a fan on top.

Will I be able to fit them both?

    Thanks everyone for your help.
If you look at the diagram for your system (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/techov.htm#wp1052739), you will see that it has a PCI-Ex16 slot at the top, then 3 PCI, then a PCI-Ex1 slot at the bottom.  This means that your video card and tuner will fit together just fine;  but the video card will cover up one of your regular PCI slots if it does indeed fill two slots.  This will leave your system with effectively two regular PCI slots available when just the video card and tuner card are installed.

Hello All,WHen I first turn on my Philips LCD and DTV HD DVR tuner in the morning, I cannot switch channels. I will push the guide or up/down channel button and nothing will happen. Sometimes if I turn it off and on 3 or 4 times, it will start to respond, or if I wait 5 minutes or so. Then it will start responding normally.Any suggestions?Thanksemailman

DB:3.65:First Thing In The Morning xp

emailman, I think you misunderstood my post. I wasn't suggesting you use the Directv box itself to tune your channels, I was suggesting that if the box changed channels when the remote wouldn't it was almost surely a remote problem. Whether you think you have an IR interference problem or not, that is far and away the most common cause and if it happens only when the equipment is cold or it's dark outside then it's even more likely. Sungam's suggestion to turn the TV off and change channels is an excellent one, it will identify the TV if it is the source. If you determine the TV is not the source, it doesn't mean it isn't IR interference, it could be a fluorescent light for example.

However, on a couple of transponders, tuner 1 is probably 10 points higher then tuner 2. So when I went back to watching TV, I found that only the tuner 2 is pixelating. The other tuner is fine and has a clear picture. How could this be? I have two lines coming from the dish into a 2 to 4 multi switch. 2 lines to my tivo and one to a tv downstairs which also has a clear picture. As I write this, I am looking at the signal strength meters for transponder 24 and tuner 2 is bouncing between 83 and 0 whiler tuner 1 is a constant 86. Same thing is happening on 16. So my questions are,1. Why would the signals vary so much on some transponders?2. Why would the signal bouce on only one tuner on some transponders?I've also witnessed my TIVO restart itself about 3 times this week. Normally about 11 PM. What's with that? Actually let me rephrase, I need two outputs, one HDMI and one other but they need to be completely seperate so that two people can use the DVR independently of each other, like a multi room setup only instead of another TV in the house it would be a slingbox hooked up to the other tuner and the remote user would have the ability to change channels and watch content without effecting the home user. I think I just need two DVR's to do this, but I'm just asking if there is an easier way to do this with just one DVR. Do any of the DVR's have this ability?

If the old multi switch was a 3x4 multi switch and not Zinwell 4x8 or a 6x8 multi switch, this probably was your problem the whole time. The 3x4 multi switch is not capable for HD, just standard, but with all that said, now the all popular 4x8 multiswitch is now obsolete with all the new HD comming out, to make a long story short.

When either recording or viewing live programming on a HD DVR(like my HR20-700), how does one know which "tuner" is delivering the content???? On a two-tuner HD DVR I am "assuming" the following:

1)When I "turn on" my DVR and tune to a channel I am ALWAYS on Tuner#1.

2)When I "turn off" my DVR it is still actively recording the last live channel selected "buffer" 24/7(and ALWAYS on Tuner#1).

3)If a scheduled recording starts up(with my DVR "turned off" OR "turned on") it will ALWAYS start recording that content using Tuner#2.

4)If a "second" scheduled recording starts up "during" the recording of the program described in Step#3(with my DVR "turned off" OR I respond "OK to change channel to record" if the DVR is "turned on I am watching a live channel") the second recording will ALWAYS record that content using Tuner#1.

5)Scenario described in Step#4 is the ONLY time that content is recorded using Tuner#1.

OK....I know that this is a lot of assuming, but if the DVR's "choice of tuner to use" is more dynamic than the static scenarios I describe, is there ANY way to determine what Tuner# is being viewed/recorded??????? I would find this to be very useful information, especially if you are trying to determine the cause for "messed up" recordings in your Playlist. It would be "nice" if the Tuner# used to make a recording could be "displayed" in the Playlist selection entry or in the Info "Banner"(that could tell you for a recording or live channel).

Any advice/additional knowledge regarding this???????

Hi, I have an HD MR-DVR and an HD STB. Since the 6 tuner thing isn't available yet, I want to replace the HD STB with another HD MR-DVR so I can record 4 shows at once and be able to view anything recorded on either MR-DVR on either TV.

I'm getting conflicting information from Verizon...is this configuration, i.e. two HD MR-DVRs possible?

    thanks!

MRDVR is a feature not an actual price of equipment. As long as you have the Multi room feature on your account your setup will work just as you want. Record 4 shows and play back from either.

I'm thinking about switching to Directv and would like to use my current Ceton Infinitv 4 CableCard tuner and HTPC in place of a Directv DVR. I'm getting conflicting reports as to whether or not this would work or not. (Meaning that I called Directv and they said "Yes" but didn't come across as confident, then when I was talking to someone else, they said "No".)

Sites I've found via Googling seem to indicate that "no" is the correct answer, but I thought I would check here.

Any help is appreciated. The person I spoke to on the phone from the sales department wanted me to sign up and have the installer do the install and see if the supplied card would work even though he didn't sound completely confident in his response.

The Ceton tuner requires an M-Card (Multi-Stream CableCARD).

    Thanks

There's no way for the PC card to tune DirecTV satellite channels. You could possibly mate it with a stand alone DirecTV Receiver, but a DVR would be much more convenient.

I have the same problem. HP Pavillion with tuner pre-installed (that was a major reason I chose it) and bundled with Windows Vista. It worked great for about a year, and then suddenly the tuner disappeared and nothing works. I'm guessing it has something
to do with an HP or Vista update. I have already had my computer stuck in a startup loop that I learned was the result of an incompatability between an HP update and a Vista update (HP acknowledges that they don't work together even though they are sold as

DB:3.22:Is It Possible To Connect A Dvr Surveillance System To Shaw Gateway? 8x

I would like my Samsung 4 channel DVR surveillance system to work with all the TV's in my home. I've spoken to Shaw customer service twice and a couple of Techs I met on the streets at different times and no one seem to have the correct information.

One Tech told me that I need a Digital Tuner/ Modulator, the same system thats used in apartment buildings to convert analog signal to digital. I was told its expensive and could be bought at Future shop or Best Buy. I went into the stores but no one seem to know about this item.

I called my electrician friend last night and he post a very interesting question. IF THE SYSTEM IS WORKING NOW WITH 4 CAMERAS GOING INTO THE SAMSUMG DVR AND THAT SIGNAL IS GOING OUT TO 1 TV THROUGH A HDMI CABLE, IT MEANS THAT THE DVR HAS ITS OWN BUILT IN DIGITAL TUNER/ MODULATOR.

The system is set up that I can only see the cameras from 1 TV, there has to be a way to see them on all the TV's in my home using my Gateway system with the Samsung DVR being able to convert the signal to Digital.

Come on wise guys at Shaw, put your heads together and figure this one out

DB:3.22:Is It Possible To Connect A Dvr Surveillance System To Shaw Gateway? 8x

    robertjardine

are your camera's network based(IP), or analog? The next question is if there is a requirement to run it through the samsung dvr system, and then to gateway?

    these are the approaches:

shaw has reserved a digital channel that can be modulated on for security cameras. This is mostly seen with mdu's (apartments, condo's etc).

    1) if samsung dvr is used, only way to convert that signal back to RF is to use products such as:

Provideoinstruments VECOAX-WM Series WALL MOUNT HDMI HD Video RF Modulator - Pro Video Instruments

these can take an hdmi signal and convert back to rf. There are some cheaper ones available, but are locked onto a specific frequency (which may not align with the proper channel). The device above however allows you to adjust the frequency to the proper channel that is reserved for security camera's.

Note: solution can be expensive, and i would be more concerned with privacy. These type of systems modulates in the "clear", therefore your neighbors could potentially pick up that signal as well.

    2) IP based security system. This would be more secure and allow for both a dvr and potentially a gateway to receive that signal and present it to your tv's via an app. While today its not available (since home networking has not been enabled), there may be something available in the future to solve that.

    3) HDMI repeater. You could take an HDMI source and wirelessly or wired send to multiple tv's connected on another HDMI port on the tv's. This may be the most cost effective way to do it as the gateway piece is not available. Check monoprice for examples on extenders/repeaters.

another turn key solution is a product called HD Flow which takes you source and converts to multicast over wireless to multiple receivers.

HD Flow Instructional Video - YouTube

HD Flow Wireless Multimedia Kit | Live a Cable-Free Life(TM)

for 4 tv's however, this particular solution can run up to $1700 bucks.

If you have Motorola equipment, then you need a DCX3400 DVR which has a IR remote input jack on it. You add a IR remote receiver, which either can be the one that comes with the DTA adapter kits, or purchase a IR remote receiver at http://www.irblaster.info/motorola_rx.htmland it will plug into the jack on the DCX3400. Any older DCT or DCH series DVR will not work with these IR remote receivers.

Make sure your DVR still has enough air flow around it to stay cool, or it will overheat and cause erratic issues or complete failure of the DVR.

rael, Keep in mind if you put the SWM splitter in the right place, it would be a simple matter to disconnect one coax and connect another if you move a receiver to another room. If you do eventually increase past 8 tuners, Directv fixed installation price would likely get you a SWM16 pretty cheap. The reason they don't install past immediate needs is that the installers are paid by number of systems installed.

Actually no one has a quad tuner STB/DVR

ATT uses IPTV, which is how they are able to record up to 4 "streams" at one time

ATT is the only big company using FULL IPTV

So to answer your question.... NO, you will not see a "quad tuner" DVR from any TV provider in the near future

I believe if you look at the back of the SWM-compatible receivers, the SAT 1 port is also marked FTM (the old name) or SWM, indicating that that's the only cable needed.

I went to sleep last night with the HD DVR tuner working and woke up with nothing today. Nothing was changed over night, but the tv will no longer pick up anything from the satellite tuner. The tv reads no signal when I select HDMI input. It appears that the tuner is fine, the lights are on, the dish outside looks fine, and I've checked all connections. The tv is working fine on all other inputs (DVD, TV, etc.). I've rebooted/powered down everything, and the tuner even started to record a show I had programmed it to record, but I can't get the input on the tv. I'm not sure it matters ont hsi tv, but I have also changed the tv channels to 2-4 to see if that worked. It didn't. Any suggestions?

DB:3.16:Hr20 Ota Tuner Not Good!? f3

I have always had a problem with my OTA HD antenna not working well with my HR20 DVR. One station shows 100% signal and then drops to acquiring signal. It does this at least once a minute. These forums have said its a multipath issue. I disagree. I have now tried 4 totally different kinds of antennas. All antennas pull 80 to 100% signal strength, yet ALL still drop to acquiring signal when hooked to the DVR. ALL work perfectly when connected directly to the TV with NO issues at all. The only issues occur when connected to the DVR. This tells me that the tuner in the DVR stinks and isnt able to lock onto the signal like the TV tuner can. Is there any work around or upgrades I can do to the DVR to make it work properly with the OTA antenna? Amplifiers, attenuators and such make no difference. DTV needs to turn on the HD locals in Rochester already!

DB:3.16:Hr20 Ota Tuner Not Good!? f3

It's generally felt the HR20 tuners are not as good as the ones in newer TVs (particularly at resisting multipath). They are better than some other DVRs though. On the receiver side, the H20-100 is OK but not great. The H20-600 has one of the best OTA tuners available. Everything really depends on the ATSC tuner chipset and the HR20 probably uses an older chipset than the one in your TV tuner.

Ok here is what I have been able to come up with. It is not for you but change over to all digital is just now happening in Northern Va.Connect your cable to the analog side of your tuner card manually set WMCtochannel #3. This will work with either your set top box or Dta.Now the bad news, there is not a Program Guide in WMC, there for you will not be able to record. You will Only be able to watch HDTV. It seems the analog side is just a pass-through native resolution of the STB or Dta in this situation. It will NOT work on the digital connection. Now we need Microsoft WMC to do a patch for at least a basic RECORD BY TIME with signal device pre-set to the Chanel you want to recordon. What would be great is a patch that would allow for the GUIDE to beavailable for your service areaas before. I MISS MY WMC DVR. jlw2_74

New 4 tuner PaceDVR's which will be in extreme short supply and only going to new Triple Play subscribers in Boston right now. These boxes are not 100% IPTV, but as with the existing RNG and DCX's, can tune in a combination of both IP and digital linear, switched and demand channels.

X1 guide updates to the existing RNG and DCX Motorola Pace boxes due to start in 2013. DCT's and DCH's don't have enough horsepower to run X1 from what was told at the early announcements. RNG, DCX boxes also do both MPEG2 and MPEG4 video.

I have a SWiM-8 and have been running3 HD DVR's, an HD receiver, and an SD receiver (off the "legacy" port, or whatever the name of that one is). I now want to add an HD DVR in place of the SD receiver. I know that I can only use 8 tuners in total. So, my question is, can I run 4 HD DVR's and an HD receiver off of that switch I currently have? It seems like I should be able to, as long as one of the DVR's is setup to only use 1 tuner. I should still have 8 tuners in total then. My question is, how do I do that? It seems like the diagrams I find show only 4 receivers hooked up. But, 3 HD DVR's, 1 HD DVR only using 1tuner,and 1 HD receiver without DVR seems like it should be a viable setup. Could I simply add another splitter where everythin comes together and then run that to the new DVR (and setup that DVR to only use 1 tuner)?

    DB:3.13:Swim kx

connect the HDDVR to the splitter coming off the SWM8 switch, and during initial set up specify single tuner. note that if you have DTV do this for you, you will get a SWM16 switch for less than the cost of the switch.

all X1 DVRs have 6 tuners (one is disabled on purpose) so in effect 5 tuners available. They can record on up to 4 of those tuners at a time leaving one to watch live TV. If you have a satellite device or more you need to give the model numbers to get a more detailed answer.

Hello all,I recently installed a new HD DVR with the BBC modules? I think that's what they are called. Anyways, I am only able to view HD channels on Tuner 1. If I'm recording an HD channel on tuner 1, and try to watch another HD channel on tuner 2 it says searching for signal. All non-HD channels can be viewed as far as I can tell.I swapped the modules with each other and it does the exact opposite. Tuner 2 gets HD and Tuner 1 does not.Any ideas? Thanks,Lunarist

I just purchased a DVR for the folks and they currently have 2 lines running into the house from the dish. (2 single basic receivers) I am told there are 4 output lines available from the dish which leaves me 2. My question is how do I add the 3rd line to enable dual tuner? Is there a way to get the arm off without damaging the dish?

    DB:3.11:X1 Questions sd

    Hello,

I am thinking about getting X1 platform, currently only have Comcast for internet, TV with DirecTV currently. I am located in the Fort Lauderdale/Pompano Beach Area.. I have some questions...

    1. I currently have two DVR's. One DVR is the Genie that can record 4 things at once, another DVR just for recording capacity, and then two tv's with the clients off of the Genie. No matter what TV I am at, I can view any of the recordings from any of the DVR's. Can and if I get two DVR's on the X1 system, can I do the same?

    2. Do the thin clients have all of the same capabilities as the DVR units? Pause, Record etc?

    3. Can I manage the DVR from remotely or from an App, mean I can see all the series recordings? Or do you have to be in front the of TV?

    4. I see that the X1 system makes use of MOCA. If I have my own MOCA adapters for my own reasons, does this interfere?

    5. X1 says 5 tuners, 4 recording and 1 live... can all 5 be HD? and can any one of the thin units take advantage of that Live Tuner?

    6. One thing thats nice about DirecTV is you only have to know one channel number... 206 is ESPN and ESPN HD for example... does the same hold true?

    7. OnDemand... Does it use a Tuner? Example... DVR recording 4 shows and utilizing the 5 live tuner, can one of the thin units use OnDemand at the same time?

I think thats it for now.

    Thanks in advance!

Replacement Dish 522 unit #4 is here and crazy as the last 3. When infrared remote sets tuner 1 to mute or pause, tuner 2 stops video or freezes. Tuner 2 uses RF only remote. It is trial error to determine which button will make tuner 2 play again. Unit #3 would usually just lose audio of tuner 2 but did freeze at times. First unit was crazy, but got too slow to use erased recordings when half full. Wife fears all new things, but is finally frustrated enough to let us switch to directv. One Direct dealer warned we might better wait for new DVR model to come in February. We will not be happy if new Directv jumps from mid recording to beginning, does strange video distortions or runs audio 3 seconds behind video as Dish has done.Should we switch to Directv DVR? Which one?

I have 2 dvr and 2 standard recievers. On 1 of my dvr's the signal is intermittant on tuner 1, tuner 2 has a steady signal. This just started a few days ago andwasn't that bad when it started but now it is coming in and out all the time. I've done cable checks on the reciever and reset it with the reset button and tried unpluging it also with no change.

Nice troubleshooting. Call DirecTV to request a replacement Receiver/DVR. It's free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan, or within 90-days of installation. Otherwise ~$20 for shipping. Or ~$50 to have a tech come replace it for you.

Well, that is not the answer I want to hear....maybe I can contact Hollywood and the networks and have them change the broadcast schedule to suit me.

DB:3.11:"Unable To Play, Too Many Tv's Watching Playlist" z9

I have Whole Home DVR and 4 TV's total. One HD DVR and 3 HD receivers. If any HD receiver is used to watch a single DVR'd show, no other HD receiver can watch ANY recorded show (not the same show, any recording on the DVR).

I called Direct TV and they kept confusing this by looking at it as if I wanted to watch the same DVR'd show on two receiverssimultaneously. Each time I explained no, there are 20 recorded shows and all 20 have a large red circle with a white line through the middle and none can be played.

Then I was told that the recorded shows use one of the Tuners on the DVR to play, so only one receiver can connect to the DVR and play shows at a time. That flies in the face of the advertised "connect up to 15 TV's to one DVR" on the website. Also, I don't believe that to be correct since the WHDVR connects via my home network. If the shows were being streamed via RG6 cable, like my old Dish unit, then sure, I believe the Tuner on the DVR is being used, but, if it's going across my network, how is it using the Tuner on the DVR? That sounds wrong, it should be using the Tuner on the Receiver. I believe that information given to me by Direct TV support to be incorrect.

I also have no solution to watching different recorded shows on multiple Receivers connected to one DVR.

Well, that was nice of them. When I asked for a compromise to match my expectations of the service when I signed up for it, she was unable to offer such a service. I was told to pay $50 to return the HD receiver and buy the HD DVR for $199. I'm bummed about my service, or lack of.
