    I'm in the market for a new 42" or larger flat panel TV. Why is it that EVERYONE (and I mean EVERYONE) I speak to recently has gone for an LCD TV instead of plasma. Is there something I don't know about plasma TVs ?? do they use too much power to operate?? do they not last as long?? do they weigh a lot more than LCDs. It seems to me that plasma TVs cost a little less but people are still shunning them......what am I missing about the differences between LCDs and plasma. I don't want to be the idiot who buys a plasma only to hear someone say "Why did you buy the plasma, don't you know that ......... ?????" Any thoughts from the learned experts ?? and, what specifics should I be looking for in a plasma TV if I were to go that route ?

    Thanks,

    Speaking of anti burn protection ,have you checked Samsung lately ? They have more anti burn protection than most people will ever use. You can keep pixel shift going constantly which can be set for 1 or 2 minutes etc and if you get any retention or burnthey have 3 or 4 different types of anti burnfeatures that will erase it out. It works well too,so I don't think LG and Panasonic are more advanced than that.Message Edited by larry777 on 04-25-2009 01:40 PM

    If it's cracked you'll need a new panel. I'd call a local repair shop with you TV's model number and get an estimate over the phone. If they won't give you one, try another shop. You may want to see if they can fix or replace your sister at a reasonable cost as well.

    DB:2.84:Difference Beween Lcd And Plasma Tvs cd

    Difference beween LCD and Plasma TVs

    DB:2.84:Difference Beween Lcd And Plasma Tvs cd

    Plasma and LCD panels may look similar, but the flat screen and thin profile is where the similarities end. Plasma screens, as its name suggests, uses a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create a picture. LCD screens (liquid crystal display) are in layman's terms sandwiches made up of liquid crystal pushed in the space between two glass plates. Images are created by varying the amount electrical charge applied to the crystals. Each technology has its strengths and weaknesses, as you'll read below.

    What advantages does plasma have over LCD?

    Apart from better contrast due to its ability to show deeper blacks, plasma screens typically have better viewing angles than LCD. Viewing angles are how far you can sit on either side of a screen before the picture's quality is affected. You tend to see some brightness and colour shift when you're on too far of an angle with LCDs, while a plasma's picture remains fairly solid. This is steadily changing, however, with more and more LCDs entering the market with viewing angles equal to or greater than some plasmas. Plasmas can also produce a brighter colour, once again due to light leakage on an LCD affecting its colour saturation.

    Plasma pundits will also tell you that some LCD screens have a tendency to blur images, particularly during fast moving scenes in movies or in sports. While that was true for older generation LCD screens, newer models have improved significantly -- so much so that the differences in performance between LCDs and plasmas in this regard is almost negligible (here's a tip -- if you're shopping for LCDs, check the pixel response time, measured in ms. The lower it is, the better the image quality in fast moving scenes).

    A new 42" plasma from Hitachi

    Traditionally, the biggest advantage plasmas have had over their LCD cousins is price, particularly in the large screen end of the market. In the past 12 months, this has changed, with LCDs matching or even beating plasmas in both resolution and price.

    LCD has the edge over plasma in several other key areas. LCDs tend to have higher native resolution than plasmas of similar size, which means more pixels on a screen.

    LCDs also tend to consume less power than plasma screens, with some estimates ranging that power saving at up to 30 per cent less than plasma. LCDs are also generally lighter than similar sized plasmas, making it easier to move around or wall mount.

    LCD pundits also point to the fact that LCDs have a longer lifespan than plasma screens. This was true of earlier plasma models, which would lose half of their brightness after more than 20,000 hours of viewing. Later plasma generations have bumped that up to anything between 30,000 and 60,000 hours. LCDs, on the other hand, are guaranteed for 60,000 hours.

    You might have also heard that plasmas suffer from screen burn in, an affliction not as commonly associated with LCDs. Screen burn in occurs when an image is left too long on a screen, resulting in a ghost of that image burned in permanently. Newer plasmas are less susceptible to this thanks to improved technology and features such as screen savers, but burn-in is still a problem. But after a few days of use most burnt-in images will fade -- they are no longer permanent.

    I would pick the Samsung Pn50 A650 for sure. Its a better hdtv and it displays excellent color accuracy of both Primary and Secondary colors resulting in a great picture. It also produces a deep black level and displays standard definition and standard dvd very well. It also has the Ultra Filterbright screen coating to control glare which is a step up from the coatings on lower priced Samsungs. The A650 earned a rating of " Excellent " from C-Net Reviews ( Expert Review ) which you can read on their site. This TV has a lot more picture adjustments than is available on the Panasonic PZ 80. In my opinion the Samsung PN50 A650 isa better hdtv than the PZ 80.Message Edited by larry777 on 02-24-2009 03:04 PM

    This is a common defect in plasmas and is usually a symptom of the actual cause. Although it could be a variety of other things, I've noticed that faulty connections to the panel boards or a bad power supply are common culprits. You'd need it looked at and repaired if you planned on keeping the TV.

    LCD TV vs. Plasma

    This is the #1 question for me at any dinner party: Which is better, LCD TV or Plasma? This is a much debated topic and a fun one. When choosing between plasma and LCD TVs, you're actually selecting between two competing technologies, both of which achieve similar features (i.e., ,bright crystal-clear images, super color-filled pictures) and come in similar packages (i.e., 3.5 inch depth flat screen casing). To complicate the decision-making process further, price and size are two previous considerations that are rapidly becoming non-issues as LCD TVs are now being made in larger sizes and at competing prices with plasma.

    Despite their similarities, the two technologies are very different in the way they deliver the image to the viewer.

    Plasma technology consists hundreds of thousands of individual pixel cells, which allow electric pulses (stemming from electrodes) to excite rare natural gases-usually xenon and neon-causing them to glow and produce light. This light illuminates the proper balance of red, green, or blue phosphors contained in each cell to display the proper color sequence from the light. Each pixel cell is essentially an individual microscopic florescent light bulb, receiving instruction from software contained on the rear electrostatic silicon board. Look very closely at a plasma TV and you can actually see the individual pixel cell coloration of red, green, and blue bars. You can also see the black ribs which separate each.

    Whether spread across a flat-panel screen or placed in the heart of a projector, all LCD displays come from the same technological background. A matrix of thin-film transistors (TFTs) supplies voltage to liquid-crystal-filled cells sandwiched between two sheets of glass. When hit with an electrical charge, the crystals untwist to an exact degree to filter white light generated by a lamp behind the screen (for flat-panel TVs) or one projecting through a small LCD chip (for projection TVs). LCD TVs reproduce colors through a process of subtraction: They block out particular color wavelengths from the spectrum of white light until they're left with just the right color. And, it's the intensity of light permitted to pass through this liquid-crystal matrix that enables LCD televisions to display images chock-full of colors-or gradations of them.

    PICTURE CONSIDERATIONSCONTRAST / BLACK LEVELS

    Plasma technology has certainly achieved quite high contrast ratios, a measure of the blackest black compared to the whitest white. Many plasma display manufacturers boast a contrast ratio of 3000:1 these days though our tests have not proven these numbers out. Panasonic has long been the leader in plasma black levels and we measure contrast of a 42" HD Panasonic plasma at about ANSI 1450:1 - still impressive. Plasma displays achieve such impressive black levels by using internal algorithms to block the power to particular pixels in order to render a pixel "dark" or black. While this can limit a plasma television's gray scaling, it does produce exceptionally black blacks - depending on the manufactured plasma display element (i.e. glass). A plasma TV uses the most power when it is producing full white. As a result, some 2nd tier manufactured brands of plasma TVs have an audible buzz or whining sound when displaying white or very light images.

    LCD (liquid crystal diode) displays, by contrast, utilize electric charges to twist and untwist liquid crystals, which causes them to block light and, hence, emit blacks. The higher the voltage passing through the liquid crystals in a given pixel, the more fully those crystals untwist and effectively block light - all of which makes these pixels darker. As opposed to plasma, LCD TVs use the most power when displaying a very dark or black image. This is a difficult process, and despite recent improvements in LCD black levels, only the best LCD televisions (like those produced by Sharp and Sony) have managed to topple the 1000:1 contrast ratio barrier. Recent improvements have brought LCD displays up to the level of plasma. The one continual drawback here for LCD is off axis viewing, when black levels consistently drop.

    ADVANTAGE: Closer than a year ago, but still Plasma. LCD TV manufacturers have made great improvements in black levels and in many cases have managed to match the contrast ratio of plasma displays. However, Plasma displays still maintain a clear advantage in this category due to fading blacks when viewing LCDs from off axis. For scenes with a lot of dark and light images shown simultaneously - as with content originating from DVDs, video games, and NTSC TV signals - plasmas still consistently outperform LCD TVs.

    COLOR ACCURACY

    In plasma displays, each pixel contains red, green, and blue elements, which work in conjunction to create 16.77 million colors. Insofar as each pixel contains all the elements needed to produce every color in the spectrum, color information was more accurately reproduced with plasma technology than it was with other display technologies. The chromaticity coordinates were more accurate on most plasma displays. Though the color saturation resulting from the pixel design of plasma displays is remarkable, LCD technology has nearly caught plasma in gray scaling color accuracy. Plasma continues to exhibit more richness in color information and more natural coloration. Today, SMPTE color coordinates in top plasma displays still normally outperform those in LCDs, which tend toward oversaturation.

    LCD TVs reproduce colors by manipulating light waves and subtracting colors from white light. This is an inherently difficult template for maintaining color accuracy and vibrancy - though most LCD displays manage quite well. While color information benefits from the higher-than-average number of pixels per square inch found in LCD televisions (especially when compared to plasmas), LCDs are simply not as impressive as plasmas with similar pixel counts. LCDs however, produce a typically brighter picture. Greens sometimes look over-green and reds can run a bit warm, but in a room with bright outdoor lighting, an LCD TV would be my choice.

    ADVANTAGE: Preference to plasma but depends upon room light, manufacturer and model. Plasma color richness and naturalness will prevail in rooms with lower to normal lighting. LCDs will be better in very brightly lit rooms due to their inherent anti glare technology and brightness.

    VIEWING ANGLES

    Plasma manufacturers have made much of their 160° viewing angles, which is about as good as horizontal and vertical viewing angles get. This owes to the fact that each pixel produces its own light, rather than light being spread across the screen from one central source. Hence, each pixel is more readily visible because its brightness is consistent with every other pixel on the screen. One consistent area of superiority of plasma viewing angles is demonstrated when viewing dark material content, especially DVDs. A Plasma display holds the black levels from off axis, while LCD TVs lose black level intensity more as the angle off axis increases. This usually occurs after around 90 degrees.

    LCD TV manufacturers have done much to improve their displays' viewing angles. The substrate material on newer-generation LCD models by Sharp and Sony has helped to expand those units' viewing angles, though they still have some ground to cover before catching plasma. Expect the best LCD HDTVs to have between 120 and 130 degree viewing angles.

    ADVANTAGE: Plasma

    FUNCTIONAL CONSIDERATIONSCOMPUTER USE

    LCD flat screens display static images from computer or VGA sources extremely well, with full color detail, no flicker, and no screen burn-in. Moreover, the number of pixels per square inch on an LCD display is typically higher than other display technologies, so LCD monitors are especially good at displaying large amounts of data - like you would find on an Excel spreadsheet for example - with exceptional clarity and precision. For the same reasons, LCD TVs will also be a slightly better template for video gaming.

    Plasma technology has increased anti burn in tactics as well as computer and static signal handling. There are still issues with each depending very much on the model and manufacturer. For example, most EDTV plasma displays do not handle a computer input well and product a very jaggy image when viewing static images from same. Users may want to consider a commercial version plasma if their application calls for a lot of computer use.

    ADVANTAGE: LCD

    FAST-MOVING VIDEO PLAYBACK

    Plasma gets the nod here because of their excellent performance with fast-moving images and high contrast levels. There are still some 2nd tier manufacturers whose plasma product displays some phosphor lag, a drag time in scenes changing from bright to dark.

    While the "response time" of LCD TVs has markedly improved in the last couple of years, they still suffer from a slight "trailer" effect, where the individual pixels are just slightly out of step with the image on the screen. During fast moving sports scenes, the most discerning eyes can detect this slight motion response lag.

    ADVANTAGE: Plasma

    HIGH ALTITUDE

    There is a reason LCD flat panels are the preferred visual display units for use on airplanes: LCD TVs aren't affected by increases or decreases in air pressure. Their performance is consistent regardless of the altitude at which they're utilized.

    This is not the case for a plasma. The display element in plasma TVs is actually a glass substrate envelope with rare natural gases compressed therein. So, at high altitudes (6,500 feet and above), an air-pressure differential emerges, which causes plasma displays to emit a buzzing sound due to the lower air pressure. This noise can sound rather like the humming of an old neon sign. NEC has been effective in producing several plasma models that are rated to 9,500 feet.

    ADVANTAGE: LCD, at 6,500 feet and higher.

    LONGEVITY

    LCD television manufacturers claim that their displays last, on average, 50,000 to 65,000 hours. In fact, an LCD TV will last as long as its backlight does - and those bulbs can sometimes be replaced! Since this is nothing more than light passing through a prismatic substrate, there is essentially nothing to wear out in an LCD monitor. However, one nasty little known fact about LCD technology is that as the backlight ages it can change colors slightly (think of florescent office lighting). When this occurs the white balance of the entire LCD TV will be thrown for a loop and the user will need to re-calibrate, or worse, try to replace the backlighting or ditch the unit altogether. Some of the early purchasers of larger LCD screens will be learning this tidbit in a couple of years. One thing that I've found in this industry, it is not easy to find out whether the backlighting on LCDs can be replaced. Manufacturers are either hesitant to discuss the topic, or they just don't know.

    Plasma, on the other hand, utilizes slight electric currents to excite a combination of noble gases (i.e., argon, neon, xenon), which glow red, blue, and/or green. This is an essentially active phenomenon, so the phosphoric elements in plasma displays fade over time. Many manufacturers state a new half life of 60,000 hours. While I am skeptical of this spec, I do believe strides have been made to nearly even the playing field with LCD. At half life, the phosphors in a plasma screen will glow half as brightly as they did when the set was new. There is no way to replace these gases; the display simply continues to grow dimmer with use.

    ADVANTAGE: Even, depending upon manufacturer quality.

    SCREEN BURN IN

    LCD technology is not prone to screen "burn-in" or "ghosting" (premature aging of pixel cells) due to the nature of the technologies "twisting crystals."

    With plasma, static images will begin to "burn-in," or permanently etch the color being displayed into the glass display element. The time it takes for this to occur depends greatly on the anti burn-in technology of the manufacturer. Recent improvements by plasma manufacturers have certainly extended the time it takes to burn in a plasma pixel cell. In the past I was concerned to place a DVD on pause 15 minutes. Now, many of the enhancements such as better green phosphor material, and motion adaptive anti burn-in technology are greatly reducing the risk of burn in. It's gotten so much better that I don't even worry about it anymore. In a new model plasma from any top tier manufacturer I would put "ghosting" estimates at an hour or more now (Ghosting can be "washed" out by displaying static gray material). Permanent burn-in I would put at more than 10 hours.

    ADVANTAGE: LCD, though not as much a concern as it was a year ago.

    OTHER CONSIDERATIONSPRODUCTION SIZE AND COST

    All television measurements are stated in inches and are for diagonal measurement of the screen from corner to corner - not including framing.

    Both plasma and LCD TVs are becoming more readily available in larger sizes though plasma still leads the size battle by a great margin. Pioneer and LG produce 61" plasma sizes while Panasonic has a readily available 65" model. Though it is not being imported into the U.S. yet, Samsung has produced a gigantic plasma of 100 inches. Though such mammoth monitors are expensive, they exhibit none of the "kinks" one might expect with such large displays. In other words, even the largest plasma displays are reliable. Large plasma displays will consume power - try 675 watts for a 65 "display compared to around 330 watts for a 42" plasma.

    The substrate material for LCD TVs has proved difficult to produce in large sizes without pixel defects owing to faulty transistors. Sharp produces one of the largest available LCD displays at 45 inches, while Samsung has a 46" LCD. Sony and NEC currently produce units measuring 40" diagonally. This will change very soon. These manufacturers will have very large LCD screens here this year if production goes as planned.

    ADVANTAGE: Plasma, though the playing field is leveling. Even though production costs and retail prices have come down for both technologies, plasma still has the edge as far as production cost and capacity go.

    POWER CONSUMPTION

    Because LCDs use florescent backlighting to produce images, they require substantially less power to operate than plasmas do. LCD TVs consume about half the power that plasma displays consume. The reason: Plasmas use a lot of electricity to light each and every pixel you see on a screen - even the dark ones. Though plasma manufacturers have improved voltage consumption requirements a plasma TV will consume around a third more power for the same size display.

    ADVANTAGE: LCD

    PRICE AND RESOLUTION

    LCD HDTV displays will have a higher resolution per same size comparison than plasma. The lowest resolution of a 40 inch LCD will be 1366 X 768 - easily full HD resolution in 1080i or 720p. A 42 inch HD plasma has a resolution of 1024 X 768. While this is not truly an HD resolution, it's close enough so that it's difficult to know the difference. A 50 inch plasma TV will have a resolution of 1366 X 768, while a 45 inch LCD displays 1920 X 1080 (1080P) resolution.

    Those extra pixels and the production process of LCD HDTVs cost more money to produce. Expect to pay a third as much more for a similar size LCD TV than a plasma display.

    ADVANTAGE: It's currently a toss-up.

    I like the LG better, slightly better signal processing, and noticeably better black level, IMO but:

    If you need an analogue audio out connection go with the B450. PQ's don't have them.

    If you have glare or uncontrolable lighting directly across from the TV, you may have a problem with reflections on the PQ. The B450 has an Anti-Reflective coating on it's screen, the PQ nada. That seems to translate to the PQ having more pop, so if reflections are not an issue, it is brighter and seems to have a little bit more fine detail in a good source.

    We explore some common misconceptions about plasma TVs — and give you the real story.

    Myth: Plasma TVs are not energy efficient and will dramatically raise my electric bill

    Reality:In general, the energy efficiency of newer plasma TVs is much improved over models from the past. On BestBuy.com you can check the yearly cost of using a plasma TV by scrolling through the images on the "Overview" section on any individual TV page (directly underneath the image of the product). There should be an image of the Energy Guide for each model. This will display your estimated yearly electricity cost in dollars and your usage in kilowatts.

    Myth: Plasma TVs are just too expensive

    Reality:The prices for plasma TVs have come way down since the early days of the technology, and are considerably cheaper than even just a few years ago. See for yourself, inour selection of plasma TVs.

    Myth: Plasma TVs can easily get permanent, burned-in images on their screens

    Reality:Plasma TV manufacturers have recently introduced a number of technologies that greatly reduce the ability of static images to "burn into" a screen. One of them moves an on-screen image back and forth slightly, creating a color change in each pixel. Another involves making longer-lasting green phosphors that are more resistant to burn-in. With these and other advances, some manufactures now claim their plasma TVs have the same resistance to burn-in as the older tube (CRT) TVs.

    By following a few simple guidelines found in your owner's manual, you should be able to avoid any issues with burn-in. If you do leave a static image on your screen for too long, it will likely just leave a ghost image that should disappear after a few new images are displayed on the screen.

    Myth: Plasma TVs are becoming obsolete, compared with LED and LCD TVs

    Reality:Plasma TV technology is still as viable as ever and generally provides a better picture in darkened rooms, a faster refresh rate, a wider viewing angle and other qualities that LED and LCD TVs generally can't match.

    Hi george+newrick,

    As this is your first post I would like to welcome you to the forum, and to also apologise for the delay in getting back to you.

    Without knowing the model of celsus TV that you have or the version number of the remote control, it would be hard to try and find a code for you. Having said this, have you tried using our online tool that will give you some codes and the procedure to programme it?

    If you are looking to find out the version of remote control, remove the lid for the battery compartment and in here you will see something like SkyRev.8R (this would be a version 8).

    Thanks,

    The verizon web site lists 40 codes for use in programming the motorola remote to control a panasonic TV. There must be a better way to match a code to a tv than to try each of 40 in turn.

    Help/advice sought

    DB:2.64:Code For Panasonic 42" Plasma Tv xc

    Hi oldwoodboats, there is a way to search for codes with your remote. I'm assuming you actually have the Philips remote, which isthelatest model we use, because the older Motorola remote only has about 4 codes for panasonic tv's. Here is how you search for a code with your remote control:

    1) Power on the TV. 2) Press and hold TV device key. While holding down the TV key, press OK. 3) Release both keys. The device keys will blink twice. 4) Press 9-2-2. 5) Point the remote at the device and press the PLAY button. 6) Press FF. Every time you press FF, the remote sends a new power-off command to the TV. Keep pressing FF until the TV powers off. You can press REW to go back to the previous code. 7) When the device turns off, press OK to store this code. (Note: if you reach the end of the code list the TV button will blink twice and return to normal operation. You can also hit Exit to cancel the device code search.)

    If you do still have the Motorola remote, take a look at this site. It has all the remote controls we've ever used:

    The NSZ-GT1 doesn't have an entry for controlling a Fujitsu plasma under TV controls. However the GS7 does. The tv is about 7 years old so it is not a model released after the gt1 came out. is there a way to specify ir codes manually or maybe a learning feature.

    DB:2.64:Nsz-Gt1 Tv Control Via Ir Blaster jf

    I have cycled through all manufacturers under the tv control section to no avail

    I then enabled the "Control TV via third party remote" (I believe that is the name of the section); this I believe (correct me if I am wrong) supposed to enable the TV control via IR blaster. This section has a Fujitsu entry which I tried.

    However, the interesting thing is that the IR blaster is not sending any signal (I used a digital camera and looked at the IR blaster through it). The TV control via IR blaster doesn't seem to send any signal for any manufacturer, my IR blaster works when sending commands to my AV receiver.

    Lcds are a bit better if use them on a very bright room and plasmas are at their 100% in a slightly darkened room the beat fir movie fans.So if you can darken the room just a bit and don't have direct sun rays coming at the screen go with plasma you will save and be able to get a bigger screenGo with Samsung or panasonic

    I did a search and found this information on the web. Perhaps it will help you. This link did not work but perhaps these code will help. Found on www.remotecentral.com

    [Link: polaroid.custhelp.com]

    Here's the technical info for each of those TV codes (for those that are interested):

    0019 = NEC1, device code 4
    0054 = RC-5, device codes 0 and 3
    0150 = Mits, device code 71
    0178 = NEC1, device code 4
    0765 = NEC1, device code 64
    1256 = NEC1, device code 64
    1276 = $0057, device code 71

    Or

    I have FLM-1511 and the latest receiver from Direct. Apparently the Direct remote will only accept 5 digit codes so I added a 1 to the 1276 code offered by Polaroid and it worked. Lovely. Obviously a cheap TV comes with a few "drawbacks".

    As a founding member of the Plasma Display Coalition, we are committed to the plasma business and we believe plasma TVs are an important segment in the flat panel display sector. In addition, unlike some current and former plasma TV players, LG possesses core technologies for plasma TVs and PDP modules, giving us unique advantages in the market. We have invested heavily to strengthen the LG brand in this segment and will continue to do so.

    The demand for plasma TVs is still growing. Based on this, we have set a goal to sell 3 million plasma TVs in 2009, giving us 19 percent of the total plasma TV market. We will focus primarily on plasma TVs 50 inches and larger, where demand is highest.

    To help us achieve our goal for this year, LG is introducing new plasma TVs with advanced features like wireless Bluetooth connectivity and Full HD resolution, along with innovative frameless designs. Additionally, LG is initiating and expanding relationships with both premium retailers and mass merchandisers through proactive collaboration in promotional activities for plasma TVs.

    To make our plasma production even more efficient, we shifted obsolete production lines over to solar panel manufacturing in 2008, and increased capacity of our more efficient lines. In 2009, we integrated our PDP module and plasma TV businesses to leverage vertical efficiencies between sets and components and create a stronger supply chain.

    LG will continue to develop a wide range of plasma displays fully accommodating customer needs and wants.

    According to Home Theater Mag LG will "follow through on plans to release six new plasma models, including two 60-inch, three 50-inch, and one 42-inch. Four of them will be 1080p. Alliances with Yahoo, Netflix, and YouTube will bring online content from those sources. The two top-line PS80 models will also include a significant new feature, THX Media Director, which enables hardware and software to coordinate the automation of picture and sound settings."

    DB:2.61:Which Tv To Buy This Weekend?? xx

    Hey, looking for some advice. I was about to buy this tv:Future Shop: TV Video: 50" Larger TVs: LG 52" 1080p 120Hz Flat-Panel LCD HDTV** (52LG70) - Futur...but then I saw this tv for $900 less:Future Shop: TV Video: 50" Larger TVs: Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV** (PN50A450)Which would you get? Main use will be watching tv (non HD at this time), watching dowloaded torrent movies/shows and playing wii. My understanding is that the 1080 isn't a big deal except for blue ray which I won't have/get as HDTV is just 720 anyhow.So, plasma vs lcd, any real difference in the real world? Any opinions on the specific tvs? Reviews of both seem pretty decent so is there any reason to pay $900 more for the LG?Thanks

    I own a plasma and I really like it, the color and responseis next to none. For LCD, its Sharp all the way, the 82 series or SE94 series. They are the best. Samsung is good too especially those 750's...WOW!

    Using a Sky Plus HD Rev 9 Handset, I found that these codes worked for these Goodmans TVs (changed the channel and volume but not tested on other functions)

    0065 Goodmans LD2614 26 inch LCD TV

    2267 Goodmans LD2412F/2 24 inch LCD TV

    (I was in an electrical store trying to find the codes for another make of TV when I realised the Goodmans televisions were changing channels - after the trouble I am having, I hope these can be of help to someone)

    I was wondering what difference it makes for the plasma to have 720 vs 1080? We are looking at a 40"-47" and will have it on the wall. Also what brand is the best?

    Thanks,

    Hey Pjohnston11,

    The designations 720p and 1080i reference the number of pixels on the shortest side of a television. A pixel is one of millions of dots that make up the picture on your TV. While 1080i includes more pixels, 720p has a progressive-scan feature that creates smooth images. 1080p combines the features of both the 1080i and 720p. With a lot of HD signals you won’t be able to see the difference, but if you have a very large screen and intend on utilizing sources like blu-ray or PS3, 1080p may deliver the best quality picture you’re seeking. If you want more detailed home theater info, there is a lot of great information on BestBuy.com

    As far as what brands are good, I would say it really depends on your personal needs and wants, as well as your personal aesthetic. I would suggest trying out brands you have had a good experience with in the past. There are many great televisions out there.

    Have fun with the experience!

    Couldn't figure out how to reply to a specific post in this forum so...

    MASSIVE THANKS to "RichardAM" for this awesome tip!:

    "OK, I'm back... seems that the Sony codes of 11100, 10111, 10505 10010 all will work for Volume, Mute, Menu and Power"

    After spending an HOUR on the phone with DirecTV and going through endless codes, I had to hang up without getting the universal DirecTV remote (white) to control my new 32" Sceptre I got for Christmas. I was sad.

    But then I decided to get back on the horse and do some internet searches, found this thread, then RichardAMs post, tried the first code listed "11100" and BOOM! I was in business!

    Thank God for the internet because relying on these companies to actually help us with their products is near impossible these days!

    Big thanks again :)

    DB:2.61:Television Stuck On Menu Screen ja

    My 42inch plasma is stuck on the menu screen. When I use the remote control to "Exit" the screen flashes for a second and then returns to the menu screen. I have unplugged the TV and cable for hours and removed the remote control batteries, but I can't get the TV to "exit" the menu screen!!! you can hear the cable in the background, so I know the TV is working. Its just the Menu screen with the options and properties will not go away no matter what I do. HELP!!
